Humour and Advertising
How can humor be used to sell a product?
Humour can be incorporated into advertisements. To sell a product, companies tend to lean more towards the humorous side of commercials in order to attract more audiences. Most of the time, consumers will be more attracted to humorous commercials instead of serious, factual ones. The key to funny advertising is to create commercials in which the humor in the commercial is appropriate to both the audience and the product. That way, the audience can view the commercial as memorable, compared to more serious commercials.
When should humor be used to sell a product?
The best way to use funny advertising is on a product that requires not much thought; products such as toys, candy, food, tobacco, etc. Through this, the audience may feel more attracted to the product since the product requires less thought and has funny advertising. However, just because a commercial is funny and attracts more people does not mean it changes the consumer's buying intentions, which is why it is good to use humor to sell a product in a specific time and day where it is busiest in order to have more chances to attract more customers through humorous advertising.
What is so important about target audience?
The target audience is very important since different people laugh at different things. One may feel offended by something another person would be rolling on the floor, laughing about. Similarly, when a child watches a funny commercial targeted at adults, they might not find it funny since the humor in the commercial is most likely more mature-sounding, as children have a more "immature" sense of humor; finding things such as poop or farts funny.

I agree with what you wrote in response to the 3 questions. From what I've read the responses correctly answer the questions. I especially agree towards your answer for your first response which states that people will be more attracted to humorous commercials. However you could also say that the relief theory is one of the reasons why humorous commercials are so attractive, this is because due to the commercials being humorous they offer relief for the viewer which makes them seem more attractive.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all of the things you mentioned in your blogpost, especially the fact that different people find different things funny - and thus companies should be careful of their usage of humor in their advertisements. In my personal opinion, I think that the usage of the incongruity theory can be used in advertisements to make them more humorous as it usually includes two things that usually don't go together.
DeleteI agree with your responses. I like how you mentioned examples of advertisements that might not suit a specific audience. I also like how you mentioned how people may get offended by a humorous commercial.
